A romantic weekend in Palm Springs
Most romantic weekends here get planned like a city break: three restaurants, two bars, a museum, and a lot of driving between them. That is the wrong shape for this valley.
The desert has a rhythm, and it's very simple. Mornings are for being outside, because they're the only hours that are reliably pleasant for eight months of the year. Middle of the day is for water and shade and doing nothing, which is not laziness here but basic competence. Evenings are for the good light, and the good light is genuinely extraordinary — the sun drops behind San Jacinto rather than a horizon, so it goes gold and then pink and then holds there for a while.
This itinerary follows that rhythm rather than fighting it. Two days, six stops, almost no driving, and one deliberate hole in the middle of each afternoon.
A note on when to come: November through April is the season this works best in. From May the morning window narrows and by July the outdoor half of Saturday needs to happen before 8am or not at all. Summer has its compensations — half the price, no queues, and the tramway becomes the best thing in California — but it is a different trip.
Book the spa first. Everything else here is flexible; a Sunday couples treatment in February is not.
Saturday
Gates open at 7:30am and the first two hours are the only comfortable ones from April onward. It is 1.8 miles round trip on rock steps to a 60-foot seasonal waterfall — best flow February to April, and thin by June. $15 per adult, paid at the visitor centre. Bring 32oz of water each; it is a requirement, not a suggestion.
Check in and stop moving. Two Mediterranean villas, no televisions in most rooms, and a policy of quiet that the staff actually enforce. Adults 13 and up only. This is the part of the weekend people skip and then regret — the desert is designed for an afternoon that goes nowhere.
315 E Arenas Road. Whiskey past 450 bottles, real cocktails, and a kitchen open late — one of the very few rooms on Arenas where you can hold a conversation. Walk-in, open from noon until late. Do this before the street gets loud, not after.
Sunday
622 N Palm Canyon Drive, 8am to 2pm, closed Tuesdays. No reservations, ever — arrive at 8 or wait 45 minutes. Order the bacon flight. Closed for a few weeks in high summer, so check before you drive over between mid-July and mid-August.
415 S Belardo Road, Thursday to Monday, 9am to 4pm. Book the couples treatment weeks ahead in season — Palm Springs spa calendars fill by December for the whole winter. If they are full, the Feel Good Spa at the Ace is the relaxed alternative and the Palm Springs Yacht Club at the Parker is the extravagant one.
The whole weekend's finale. Ride up two hours before sunset — $36.95 each, $15 to park — and stay for dinner at Peaks or a drink at the Lookout Lounge. It is 30 to 40 degrees colder at 8,516 feet, so take a jacket even in August. Last car up 8pm, last car down 9:30pm.
